Newsletter 12-30-15

We had fun during our last couple weeks of school before the break.  We did holiday art, sang songs, and wrote friendly letters to Santa.

In language arts, we read Dear Juno and Anansi Goes Fishing, and we practiced verbs.  We also continued to work on two-digit addition with regrouping.  The kids are doing great!

Remember to have your child keep doing Reflex Math over the break to keep his or her skills sharp.  We had another student reach 100% fluency in addition and subtraction 0-10.  Terrific job, Kameron!

We got to see our Sunrise Singers' holiday program.  It's exciting that so many students in our class have joined the choir.  They did a fabulous job!

We had an important assembly teaching us more about Internet Safety.  A representative from NetSmartz taught us important rules about the using the Internet.  Check out the link in the technology section on the right of our blog page.  It has fun games and videos for kids.

We also got to sing for the other classes at Sunrise during our Sing Around the Tree assembly.

Alexis was honored with a citizenship award for caring.

Hopefully your child has been enjoying the extra time to read over the break.  Students should bring back their December reading calendars on Monday, January 4.

Thank you for the wonderful Christmas gifts and cards.  I loved them!

Enjoy the rest of your break.  I look forward to seeing your children this Monday!

Newsletter 12-6-15

Parents,

We started Unit Three in language arts with the story Pearl and Wagner.  It is a fun story about friendship and creative ideas.  We also learned about verbs, reviewed antonyms, and discussed idioms.

We just finished topic 7 in math, mental subtraction.  We learned several strategies for subtracting two-digit numbers and practiced them on the test Friday.  We will be starting topic 8, two-digit addition, on Monday.

In social studies, we are still talking about needs and wants and finishing our economics books.

You may have noticed a graph on the inside cover of your child’s planner.  This is for the students to graph their scores on the language arts weekly tests and the CFA.  Studies have shown that students tend to be more motivated when they track their own progress.  Our goal is to gradually improve our scores throughout the year.  You can check the graph weekly.

Please make sure your child brings her or his signed planner to school every day.  This is an important communication tool.  Let me know if your child’s planner is lost.

If your child hasn’t returned his or her November reading calendar, I will still accept them.  I reminded the class that they should continue to read over the holiday break and mark it on their December reading calendars.  They should also continue to practice math facts with Reflex Math.  We have some students who are close to 100% mastery in addition and subtraction.

Let me know if you have any questions or concerns.  Thanks for all your support at home!

Newsletter 11-23-16

Parents,

After a week of review, our class did so well on our second language Arts CFA.  Everyone worked hard and did their very best!

We’re still learning strategies for mental subtraction in math.  Reflex Math has been helping with our math fluency.

We’ve been doing some fun Thanksgiving activities.  We wrote about what we are grateful for, made a graph of our favorite foods, and did a turkey art project. Ask your child which president proclaimed Thanksgiving a national holiday.

We filled up our marble jar and earned a party!  We’ll have popcorn and watch a Reading Rainbow tomorrow.

Congratulations to William and K.C.!  They were winners in the Reflections contest this year.  William's project is moving to the district level!

We had a terrific Scales and Tails assembly.  Conner got to be a helper!

If you are ordering books from the Scholastic book order, please send it in with the money tomorrow.  If you want to order online, please have it in by Wednesday night.  Let me know if you want me to keep the books a secret for Christmas gifts.

Thanks for all you do.  Have a wonderful Thanksgiving break!

Newsletter 11-16-15

Parents,

We finished unit two in language arts, so this is our review week.  We are practicing reading skills like cause and effect, compare and contrast, and fact and opinion.  We are also working on nouns, contractions, and homophones.  We’re finishing our informative writing essays on Abraham Lincoln this week.  We all practiced speaking and listening skills when each reading group performed a play for the class.

We don’t have our regular homework packet, but please have your child keep reading and practicing math facts with Reflex Math.  We had our first student reach 100% fluency on math facts 0-10 in Reflex Math.  Way to go, William!

We finished our math unit on mental addition and will begin mental subtraction tomorrow.  We are learning many strategies to do two-digit math problems in our heads.

Our kids were awesome at their RAD Kids graduation!  I was so proud of them!

We’re excited about our field trip to Alta tomorrow to see Cinderella.  Thank you to everyone who volunteered to be a parent chaperone, but we could only bring two this time.  We will have other field trips later this year.

Book orders will go home tomorrow, but you may also order online, where there is a much larger selection.  If you would like to order books for your child for Christmas, just send me an email, and I’ll make sure they don’t see them.

You should have received an email recently from Canyons School District asking you to fill out a brief survey about our school.  If you get a chance to do that, we would appreciate the feedback.  Thanks!

Have a great week, and let me know if you have any questions or concerns.
