November Newsletter

Our class had our own mock election and predicted who would be President!  We also attended a candy bar debate presented by our buddy class.  After listening to speeches, we voted for our favorite candy bar and Twix won the election.  We all got a Twix bar to celebrate!

We had fun with Thanksgiving writing and math activities, as well as several art projects.  We had a great time making turkeys with our buddy class.  It was nice time to reflect on what we appreciated about each person in our family.

We are so excited that we have RAD Kids next week!  Please remind your child to wear comfortable clothes and shoes all week.  We will have our RAD Kids graduation next Friday at 9:00.  There will be more information during the week.

Our big question in reading has been "How can we work together?"  All of our stories have revolved around this theme.  We have learned about common nouns, proper nouns, plural nouns, and possessive nouns.

Our math unit is on mental math addition.  We are practicing adding two-digit numbers in our heads.  I love hearing all the strategies our smart kids come up with to find the correct answers.  They are so creative!

We have been reading Jan Brett books this week, such as The Mitten and The Hat.  The kids loved going to her website on Thursday.  The link is on our blog.

If you still want to order books, the link is https://orders.scholastic.com/GYPDT.  If you would like to order Christmas gifts for your kids, just send me an email, and I will make sure they don't see them.  I will send in the order on Saturday.

Reading charts are due on Monday.  Remember to have your child practice with Kids' College, too.  The goal is 100 minutes each month.

Have a great weekend!

Halloween Fun

October was a fun month at school!  We had special songs and activities, and it was over before we knew it.

We made spooky Halloween art projects this month.

We are studying place value in math.  Our next unit is money, so it would be great if you could start practicing counting money at home.  There are money lessons and games on this blog.

Our Kids' College goals have been reduced.  Students are asked to do twenty-five minutes a week, making the goal one hundred minutes per month.  They are welcome to do more than that, but they need at least that many minutes to get the PTA prize.  Our login is KCC63296.

We had a great Red Ribbon Week!  We wore slippers, boots, crazy socks, and sunglasses.  This is a picture of us wearing red on the last day.  We are holding up skeletons that we made with our buddy class.

In language arts, we read an amazing dog story called Tara and Tiree, Fearless Friends, by Andrew Clements.  We also read Abraham Lincoln, by Delores Malone.  We are studying common and proper nouns.

We had a terrific Halloween party!  Everyone looked so good in their costumes.  Our room mothers made fun centers with crafts, games, and stories for the kids.  Thank you to Mrs. Snaufer, Mrs. Schnabel, Mrs. Hollberg, Mrs. Johnson, and Mrs. Mogenson.

Fall Newsletter

We have had a great first month of school!  Our class has been working hard and having fun.

We have enjoyed our weekly content areas.  Some of our favorites were outer space and the desert.  Next week is a review week, so there will be no spelling test.

Thank you for signing and sending your child's planner each day.  It is a great way for us to communicate.  Please continue to have your child read and practice their math facts.  Remember the goal for Kids' College is forty minutes a week for second grade.

Please send back homework on Fridays, even if it is done early.

We are reading Eric Carle books in class and studying insects.  We love The Honeybee and the Robber.

We had a good time with our buddy class, Ms. Salamon's sixth grade class.  We played addition bingo together.  The big kids were so sweet with our second graders.

We have been doing many apple activities in class.  We learned about Johnny Appleseed, made a book, tasted different varieties of apples, and made a graph.  We have done apple writing and apple art.

Book orders are due next Friday, October 12.  We'll try to have them here by Halloween.

Thanks so much for your help in class.  Please let me know if you have any question or concerns.  Remember there is no school this Monday.

We had a fabulous time on our field trip to the animal farm.  Enjoy the pictures!

We even got to feed them!

We're making ice cream.

It was delicious!

We had fun on the hay ride.

The horses were friendly.

What a great field trip!

End of the Year

We had a great time at the school Fun Run!   It was exciting to see so many students from our class there.  Thank you for your donations.  Zackery got to help turn Mr. Schofield into an ice cream sundae!  Our class collected the most money out of all the lower grades, so we won extra recess time!

We have been working hard practicing our musical, The Ugly Duckling.  We are looking forward to performing for the school and for our families.  Our performance is Thursday, May 24 at 2:00.  We would love to have you there!

Please turn in your child’s prestigious student form as soon as possible.  I would love every student to receive a new pin for his or her lanyard!

We have enjoyed the stories in our new reading unit about families.  We’ve read Brothers and Sisters, Jalapeño Bagels, and Carousel.

We finished our math unit on graphs, and now we are studying numbers and patterns to 1,000.

We finished our geography unit with Mrs. Moss, and we started our weather unit this week with Mrs. Bray.

Thank you to our classroom volunteers who have helped grade and review our math drills.  Our kids are getting so much quicker with their math facts!

Three cheers for our stars of the week, Autumn and Paisley!  It’s been great getting to learn more about them.

We did some fun activities with our buddies.  We made bunnies, played a synonym game, and decorated butterflies together.

We loved the activities for “I’m going to college!” week.  We got to wear college gear, learn about different careers, and meet our favorite college mascots!  We made up our own college name, Awesome Adams University, and we got to do our cheer for the whole school!

We were so lucky to have a real author visit our classroom today!  Her name is Kathleen Wright, and she wrote a book called Dog Daze.  She told us about herself, answered questions about being an author, and helped us write our own stories.  If your child would like a personalized copy of her book, please return the attached form with the money by next Monday, May 7.

Book orders are due Friday, May 11.  Your orders help us earn free books for our classroom.

We had a busy January!  We are reading a story called My Big Bushy Mustache in language arts.  We’re learning new vocabulary and looking for problems and solutions in our stories.

The math chapter we just started is using addition and subtraction.  We are still working on addition and subtraction with regrouping.  The more we practice, the better we get!
