Newsletter 9-4-16

We read The Twin Club this week and talked about communities.  We learned about characters and setting.  We identified the subject and the predicate in sentences.

We are learning addition strategies in math.  We practiced counting on, doubles, and making ten.  Please practice doubles and near doubles at home.  We made doubles dudes and did this doubles rap in class: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jG6n5xLt-0Q

Reflex Math is set up and ready for your child to start practicing their math facts.  The website is https://www.reflexmath.com/go  The username is 2kadamscsd.  The password is your child’s seven-digit student number, the same one they used last year.  I will send log-in sheets home on Tuesday.

Pearson is ready to go, as well.  I will send home a parent sheet with instruction for how to use it at home.

We had an awesome Scales and Tails assembly on Friday.  We had fun and learned a lot about reptiles.

Congratulations to Brox Forsythe-Barker for earning our citizenship award for respect!

It was great seeing many of you at Back to School night.  If you weren’t able to make it, please read the green disclosure, and sign the yellow form saying that you and your child read it.  If you have any questions, please let me know.

Many students did a great job bringing back their homework packet on Friday.  The packet includes a vocabulary practice page, a spelling activity for each day, and a math review.  If your child is spending twenty minutes per day and is still not able to finish it, please write a note at the top explaining that.

If you haven’t sent back the PTA envelope, the green page I sent home, or your child’s emergency packet, please do that as soon as possible.  Please remember to sign planners each day.

I will be sending home a book order next week, but you are welcome to go online before that at https://clubs.scholastic.com with our class code GYPDT.  This is completely optional, but many parents like to use Scholastic to buy reasonably priced books.  The books you order for your child will help us earn free books for our classroom library.  I prefer you order online, if possible, plus online ordering allows you to order books from all the different fliers and to search for particular books.  I put some Kevin Henkes books on my recommended reading list.

We’re looking forward to SOAR week.  Each day we will review our behavior expectations at Sunrise and have tickets and fun prizes for students who follow those rules.  Check the flier that was sent home Friday for more information.

We have a wonderful class, and I have thoroughly enjoyed my first few days with them.  Thank you for your support and your donations.  Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns.

Newsletter 8-28-16

Parents,

It’s been fun getting to know your children.  We’ve spent the last few days doing friendship activities, learning the SOAR rules for our school, and practicing classroom procedures.  We began our first unit in Reading Streets, started our first math topic, and learned two new addition games.  We wrote about summer vacation, read books by Kevin Henkes, and did writing and math activities with our names.  It’s been a busy week!

Thank you to those of you who returned the PTA envelope, the class information page, and the emergency preparedness kits.  If you haven’t had a chance to do that yet, please return them next week.  We would love to have all our Sunrise families join the PTA!

Thank you to all of you who have been signing your child’s planner each night.  Students will be expected to have their planners signed and returned every day.  It is a great organizer and communication tool.

I will be sending home a homework packet on Monday.  Please have your child complete it throughout the week and return it by Friday.  It should not take them more than twenty minutes each night.  I will give you more information at Back to School Night this Tuesday, but you can email me or call me if you have any questions.

I will be sending the children home with take-home folders on Monday.  Students should use them each afternoon to take home their papers, and they should bring them back to school each morning.  Please help them keep track of their folders the whole year.

I’m looking forward to seeing you Tuesday, August 30 at 5:30 for Back to School Night.  I will give you more information at that time.

Please visit our class website at http://mrsadams2.blogspot.com.  You can find this newsletter and links to educational websites.

Enjoy the rest of your weekend!

Newsletter 5-15-16

It's hard to believe we're getting so close to the end of the school year.  This week we're learning all about cowboys in language arts.  We're writing facts and details about the special gear cowboys wear.  We're planning to dress like cowboys and cowgirls this Friday!

We are learning how to tell time in math.  Students need to be able to tell time on an analog clock to the nearest five minutes.  Please help your child practice this at home with a clock or a watch.  They can also use the time links on my blog to play fun learning games.

Amanda was our latest student to get 100% fluency on her math facts in Reflex Math.  Way to go!

Even though we are getting near the end of the year, it is still important for students to return homework and study their spelling words.  Please continue to sign and send back planners, too.

Thank you for the nice gifts and cards for Teacher Appreciation Week.  Thank you to Mrs. Pappas, as well, who helped the kids decorate the door and surprise me when I got back from lunch.

Our field trip to the aquarium was terrific!  We saw amazing animals and learned about whales in our special presentation.  We topped off our day with lunch and playtime at the park.  Thank you to our parent chaperones who helped.

Thanks for your support at home.  Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns.
