Hi,
parents! This update is longer than
usual, since there is so much information at the beginning of the year.
- · It was nice to see so many of you at Back to School Night. If you weren’t able to make it, please read the red disclosure that was sent home, and sign and return the blue paper.
- · Our ELA story this week was The Twin Club. We learned about characters and setting, writing complete sentences, and reading and writing short vowel words. We practiced taking a spelling test on Friday.
- · We learned about communities in social studies. We read Me on the Map and made flip books. Ask your child about urban and rural communities.
- · We have been practicing addition facts in math. We learned many strategies, including memorizing doubles facts. We’ve had fun doing the doubles rap and making doubles dudes. Students can bring sunglasses and/or baseball caps to school this Friday when we do our own doubles rap.
- · We practiced logging on to our Chromebooks and getting on Reflex Math this week. It is so important for second-graders to learn their addition and subtraction facts. We would like all students to be 100% fluent by the end of October, so please encourage them to practice every day, if possible. If your child is not able to get on a computer or iPad at home, the school computer lab is open every morning at 8:00. The website for Reflex Math is https://www.reflexmath.com, and the user name for my students is 2kadamscsd. The password is your child’s seven-digit ID number. The log-in card is stapled in your child’s planner, but you can email me if you need it again.
- Our character trait this month is being respectful. We have been reading books by Kevin Henkes to help illustrate that trait and others. We have also learned more about ourselves and our classmates.
- · Thank you for sending a healthy snack with your child each day. Our lunch is at 12:20, and students get hungry. Having something to eat helps them concentrate the rest of the morning.
- · Thank you for responding to my first email. If you have an additional person who would like to get the updates, please send me their email address, and I will add them to the list.
- · If you haven’t sent back your PTA envelope, please do that as soon as possible. Signing up does not mean that you need to volunteer. Your six dollars will help fund field trips, class parties, and many school-wide programs. Even if you can’t contribute, please write your child’s name and “no thank you” on the envelope.
- · If you haven’t sent back the emergency packet that was sent home the first day, please do that as soon as possible. It’s a Ziploc bag that needs to have an emergency snack, water and the information card that was provided.
- · Next week is SOAR week! Students will wear red on Tuesday, white on Wednesday, blue on Thursday, and bright colors or school shirts on Friday.
- · Instead of a cookie dough fundraiser, this year we are asking for donations to support our wonderful radKIDS program. Some students got their envelopes on Friday, and the rest will get them on Tuesday. The envelopes need to be sent back, even if your child was not able to get any donations. radKIDS teaches children important safety lessons and self defense. Our class will get their lessons this November and December, and will graduate on December 8. You can learn more about radKIDS at http://www.radkids.org.
- · Thank you to those who signed up to volunteer on Back to School Night. If you would like to help out in our classroom or at home, please email me, and I’ll add you to the list. If you can’t make it on your scheduled day, please let me know as soon as possible.
