ELA
It was review week in language arts.  We practiced reading fluency, comprehension, and phonics.  We wrapped up the week with the unit four test.

Math We finished topic 12 in math, three-digit subtraction.  We reviewed today and will take the test on tomorrow.  Students brought home a review sheet today.  Please make sure they complete it and get a parent signature to show that you reviewed it together.  It helps so much for the test.  Students who return it tomorrow with a signature will get a something to celebrate and a small prize.

We made it to 91%! Hooray!  Please makes sure your child keeps working on Reflex Math.  We would like everyone to achieve 100% fluency.

Congratulations to Kayli for earning 100% fluency!

Madelyn earned 100% fluency.  Fantastic!

Other News

We had an assembly to learn about Jump Rope for Heart.  The tricks the kids did were amazing!  Some of our students have already brought in donations for the American Heart Association and earned prizes.

We filled all 100 squares on our behavior chart and earned a Saint Patrick's Day party.  We wore green, made Lucky Charms bar graphs and learned how rainbows are made.

Please make sure your child has a signed planner each day. Children should also have a snack each day, and a water bottle is very helpful.

Let me know if you have any questions or concerns.

Newsletter 3-10-18

It was so nice meeting with all of you last week.  Your children are wonderful!

ELA
We read The First Tortilla, a legend about a young girl who is a hero and saves her village.  We continued to work on adverbs and the comprehension skills this week, plot and theme.

Math
We finished our unit on three-digit addition and took the test on Wednesday.  Thank you for having your children do the review page.  It really helped them be prepared for the test.  We started our unit on three-digit subtraction.

1.  Many of you expressed interest in knowing how to monitor your child’s progress in Reflex math.  I am including the information again for how to create a parent account.  If you are missing some of the login information check with your child first, and then email me if that doesn’t work.

Creating a parent account
Parents can easily monitor their child’s math fluency progress on Reflex with a Reflex Parent Reporting Account.
To set up an account, you will need your child’s Reflex sign in information (their teacher’s Reflex Username, the name of the Reflex Class,
and your child’s Reflex Password). Your child should have this information if they’re logging on to Reflex regularly.
  1. Go to https://www.reflexmath.com
  2. Near the bottom of the screen, click Sign up for a free Reflex Parent Account today!
  3. Enter a valid email address as your Username and click Sign Me Up.
  4. Click the Activation Link in the email you receive, and create a Password when prompted.
  5. Click Register when done.
Once registered, launch Reflex at https://www.reflexmath.com Log into your new account. Enter your Username (your email address) and Password
and click Submit.
If you do not receive the activation email, please check your junk or spam folder.

Adding students to a parent account:

If you have other children that are using Reflex, you can add them to your Parent Reporting account to follow their progress.
  1. On a PC or Mac, go to https://www.reflexmath.com and log in to Reflex. Enter the Username and Password you created.
  2. Choose Add Student in the lower left corner. After you’ve read the information on the screen, click Continue.
  3. Enter your child’s Teacher Username and click Submit.  My teacher Username is 2kadamscsd
  4. Select your child’s class from the list.
  5. Select your child’s name from the list.
  6. Enter your child’s password for Student Password and click Submit.  This is their student ID

Now when you select your child’s name on the screen, you can look at the reports on your child’s progress in Reflex.

Other News
We got our parts and started practicing for the Ugly Duckling musical. The performance will be April 25 at 2:00.

We had an opera assembly, where we saw a performance of Little Red Riding Hood.  Connell and Harper got to be part of the performance as trees!

We had a wonderful piano assembly.

Santi earned our citizenship award for friendship.  Congratulations!

Harper is 100% fluent in Reflex Math.  Fantastic!

Iris completed her twenty-book challenge.  Great job!

Report cards went home on Friday.  Please let me know if you have any questions.  As we progress through the year, there is more required to meet each standard and show mastery.

Please give the school at least a week's notice before you leave for a vacation.  You can fill out the form in the office, or you can print it at home and send it with your child.

Please help your child remember to bring her or his signed planner and a snack each day.  A water bottle is also helpful.

Next week is a review week, so there is no homework packet or spelling test.  Please have your child use the extra time to do Reflex Math and Reading Plus.

Let me know if you have any questions or concerns.

ELA
We read Life Cycle of a Pumpkin and continued to work on adjectives.  Our comprehension skill was sequence, and we used a graphic organizer to show the plant life cycle.

Congratulations to Eli for completing his 20-Book Challenge!

Math
We are wrapping up our topic on place value.  We will review today and have the test tomorrow.  I am sending home a review page today so that students can practice for the test.  Please go over it with your child, sign the page, and have her or him return it tomorrow for a Something to Celebrate.

We're so close to reaching our goal of 90%!  Please encourage your child to practice their math facts each day, and have them show you that they're getting the green light.

Special Events
We had a nice time on our field trip to Capitol Theater.  The ballet was beautiful, and it was a great cultural experience.

We had a fabulous Valentine's Day party.  There were games, crafts, stories and snacks. Thank you so much to our room moms for helping.

Thank you for all the nice Valentine's Day gifts.  I love the stuffed animals, mugs, flowers, office supplies, and delicious chocolates!

We were so lucky that our school was invited to test Google Expeditions.  Through augmented reality, we were able to see inside a tornado, go under the sea, and look for camouflaged animals.  What an awesome experience!

Reminders
If you haven't signed up for parent teacher conferences, please do so as soon as possible.  I look forward to meeting with you and your child.

Thank you for all of your support.  Please contact me if you have any questions or concerns.

Newsletter 2-9-18

ELA
We wrapped up unit three last week.  We practiced fluency and comprehension, played review games, and took the unit test.  We started unit four this week with the story Froggy Fable.  We learned a good lesson about change while talking about the frog and butterfly life cycle.  We also learned about adjectives and practiced drawing conclusions.

In the second half of the year, we start adopting more of the third grade program.  This includes a greater focus on vocabulary.  Vocabulary words are tested each week in our weekly test, which includes five vocabulary questions, five phonics questions, and five comprehension questions.  I have started writing your child's score on the story that goes with each weekly test so that you can see their progress.

We have started using the program Reading Plus in class.  It is proven to increase achievement when used consistently.  If your child would like to use this program at home, they need to log in through clever.com.

Math
We finished topic eight, money and time, and our class  did very well on the test.  Thank you for working with your children at home.

We are onto topic nine, place value.  We are working with three-digit numbers and writing them in different forms: standard form, expanded form, and word form.  We've also been making models of the numbers and drawing them.  I included a reteaching page in the email to explain this and to help your child practice.  I also added some games that you can play at home with dice.

We dropped to 87% for a while, but we're back up to 88%.  If your child is not getting on Reflex regularly, they may start to lose facts. They need to prove that they are maintaining their fact fluency.

Science
We have been learning about how animals adapt to their environments.  We practiced the vocabulary words predator, prey, camouflage, and adaptation.

White Ribbon Week
We talked about how we can stay safe on the Internet.  We had fun dressing up and remembering that we have the power to make good choices with technology.

Reminders
Our field trip to see Ballet West is this Tuesday.  We would like students to dress appropriately for the theater and use their best manners.

If you haven’t signed up yet for parent-teacher conferences, please do so as soon as possible.  I look forward to meeting with each one of you.

The kids are so excited to make their Valentine’s Day boxes!  The pink note I sent home gives additional information.  If students are not able to make a box, they can decorate a bag at school.

If you are going out of town and your child will be missing school, please remember to fill out a vacation form at least a week ahead of time.  I am sending the form again as an attachment.  You can print it at home and send it to school with your child.  This is important because it changes the way the absence is reported, and it gives me an opportunity to get work ready for your child.  Thank you to those of you who have already done this for upcoming vacations.

Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns.

ELA
We read A Weed is a Flower, a biography about George Washington Carver.  We learned linking verbs and worked on fact and opinion.  We also wrote opinion essays explaining in which country we would like to celebrate our birthdays and why.  We worked in groups to sort words with comparative and superlative endings.

Math
We are studying money and time in math.  Students need to tell time to the nearest five minutes, using a.m. and p.m.  We will have the test on Wednesday.  I will send a study page home on Monday that so that the children can practice, and you can review the problems with them.  We had fun making these piggy banks.

We also did a money Nearpod.

Field Trip
We are looking forward to seeing Ballet West perform Cinderella on February 13. Please return the permission slip, if you haven't so already.  We could only take two chaperones, but we'll have another field trip later this year.

Valentine's Day
Our party will be Wednesday, February 14 from 1:00 to 2:15, and we need parent helpers!  If you are able to run a game, do a craft or read a story, please respond as soon as possible.

Students may bring their own decorated boxes to school for their valentines.  The box should have a large opening and be able to fit on students' desks.  If students don't have a box, I will have bags that they can decorate.  Please don't have your child bring their box until Valentine's Day, since I don't have room to store them.  My students last year had so much fun with this!

I've included a list of names for valentines.  Students don't have to bring valentines, but if they do, they need to bring one for everyone in the class.  We have 28 students.

Newsletter 1-18-18

We have been reviewing verbs in language arts.  We've practiced past, present and future tenses, played games, created books, and made our own verb super heroes!

We have been working on money in math.  Even if students are able to identify coins, they may still have a hard time counting them.  Please take some time over the long weekend to have your child practice counting coins.  I have some money games on the right side of my blog that they may enjoy, and there are many free apps for iPads and tablets.  They can also use the money manipulatives on Pearson at this link: http://media.pearsoncmg.com/curriculum/math/Tools/tools/EnvisionMoney.html?helpDir=./help_mt&returnURL=../MTindex.html

We are moving toward our next goal, 90%.  Please make sure your child is going on Reflex Math at least five days a week at least until they get the green light.  Being fluent in math facts helps our children with their classwork and on the CBM test.

Brody is 100% fluent in Reflex Math.  Fantastic!

We had a great SOAR week!  We read We're all Wonders, interviewed new friends, and handed out our own SOAR tickets. We had many kids enter the Wonder contest and get a SOAR ticket, and the winner will have her or his entry displayed in the lunchroom.

Jaya, Oliver, Madelyn and Amer have all completed the 20 book challenge and earned their prizes.  Terrific!

Please remind your child to bring a snack every day.  Students also enjoy having a water bottle so that they can have longer, more frequent drinks.

Please contact me if you have any questions or concerns.

Newsletter 1-6-18

Happy New Year!
We've had a great week at school!  We came back rested and ready to work.  We read the book Squirrel's New Year's Resolution and made our own resolutions for 2018.

Language Arts
We read the story Anansi Goes Fishing and talked about how creative thinking can solve a problem.  We read another Anansi story, A Fool Goes Fishing, and compared and contrasted the two stories.  There are many Anansi books you could look for when you visit the library.  We also talked about past, present, and future tenses of verbs.

Math
We are working on one and two-step problems in math.  These can be very tricky, and I am impressed with how well our class is doing.  The way we teach it may be unfamiliar to you, so I will try to explain it below to show you the steps we do in class:

1. Read the problem through the first time.

2. Close read the problem again.  Circle the numbers, box the key words, and underline the question.

3. Draw a bar diagram (part-part-whole.)  This will help you organize your information.  The whole is always on top, and it is the always the largest number.  The parts are always on the bottom, and they are always the smaller numbers.

4. Decide where your information will go in the bar diagram.  For example, in this problem we see that there are more yellow bricks than red bricks, so the yellow bricks will go on top.  (I have students write a y for yellow and an r for red.)

We can see that there are 47 yellow bricks, so that number will be our whole and go on top.  We don't know how many red bricks there are, so that is our mystery number.  We can leave it blank or write a question mark.  We know that there are 23 more yellow bricks than red bricks, so that will be our other part.

5. Once we have two of the numbers, we can solve.  We all know two rules: part + part = whole and whole - part = part.  When we are done, we check our work and plug the number back into the story problem to see if it makes sense.

I attached the reteaching page to the email in case you want to practice at home.

I will be sending home graded math pages on Monday. Please look them over to see how your child is doing.  I try to have the children correct with me or with an aide or parent helper whenever possible.

We are gradually moving up in Reflex Math.  Please try to have your child do this daily at home.  It really helps if they know their math facts when we get into these difficult problems.

We are planning to have the math test on Wednesday.  I will send home a review page before that.  If students complete it at home and have you review and initial it, they will get a something to celebrate ticket.  Thank you for your help!

Other Information
We have many students forgetting their signed planners each day.  This is a good communication tool, so please help your child remember to get it signed and put it in his or her backpack.  Please remind your child to bring a healthy snack each day, too.  Water bottles are also a good idea.

Thank you so much to our parent volunteers.  You help in so many ways.  Here's a reminder of the schedule:
