Last
week in language arts, we read the story Rosa
and Blanca and worked on verb tenses.
We also practiced theme and sequence in realistic fiction. This week’s story is A Weed is a Flower, a biography about
George Washington Carver. Ask your child
about this extraordinary man and his inventions. We also talked about linking verbs and worked
on fact and opinion. We had fun playing the game comparative and superlative scoot to practice our spelling words.
We finished our unit on two-digit addition
with regrouping, and our class did great on the test! We started two-digit subtraction with regrouping
this week. This is a difficult concept,
but the more we practice, the better we get! We had fun acting out problems with Mrs. Tens and Mr. Ones using cookies.
We
had two more students reach 100% fluency in Reflex Math. Congratulations Jessica and Conner! Knowing our basic math facts is so important,
especially as we begin solving two and three-digit problems. Please encourage your child to use Reflex
Math regularly to help develop these skills.
We started the year out right by writing our New Year's Goals.

We
learned about Martin Luther King Jr. and wrote about his life.
We have been reading books by Jan Brett. They tie in with our question of the week, using creativity to solve a problem. Students can click on the Jan Brett link on the right under language arts to find great pictures, videos, and activities.
We had a fabulous Sky Birds assembly this week. We got to meet and learn about an owl and an eagle from the Hogle Zoo.

Thank
you to all of our wonderful volunteers who help in the
classroom. Here is another copy of the schedule.
Dylan won the grand prize in the Eagle 200 Club! We all enjoyed having a giant carrot in our classroom for the day.
